Compassion in the Workplace Initiative

On November 11, 2011, Greg Fischer, Mayor of Louisville, announced a resolution adopting the International Charter for Compassion and declaring Louisville, Kentucky a participant in a Ten-Year Compassionate City Campaign. LSHRM partnered with the Partnership for a Compassionate Louisville to create a template of compassionate actions businesses may undertake to be considered a compassionate workplace.

In July 2012, the LSHRM Compassion in the Workplace Project Team conducted a membership survey to assess the value of compassion in the workplace and to obtain feedback on the template for compassion in the workplace. Nearly 95% of the responses affirmed the wording, telling us widespread agreement about the movement and application to the workplace.
