March Chapter Meeting: Talent Solution: Transitioning Veterans

James Tongate Cecilia Clark
Michelle DeJohn

This presentation is focused on the core challenge of translation & transferability when it comes to military veterans’ skills/experience when considering them for employment. The basis of the presentation aligns to the great research quote from the Institute for Veterans & Military Families (IVMF), Syracuse University – “Guide to Leading Policies, Practices & Resources”: “Employers…cite practical impediments to executing a veteran-focused employment strategy. Such impediments form the basis of tension between external pressures based on ‘doing right’ by America’s veterans, and the practical realities associated with managing a fair, efficient, and effective human resources practice.”

Be awesome and Support Best Buddies!

Everybody needs a friend. But not everybody has one. It can be very hard for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities to make connections on their own. So Best Buddies matches them with a peer volunteer to form a "buddy pair". New friends open up a whole new world of opportunities! And donations from people like you and make local Best Buddies programs possible. Big, small, somewhere in between your support will not go unnoticed. Join us in giving the gift of friendship - register to walk with us at the Best Buddies Friendship Walk or make a donation today.

Legislative Update

At the National Level

With the passage of The Bipartisan Budget Act on February 9th, hardship withdrawals from employer-sponsored 401(k) and 403(b) retirement plans will be easier for employees to make. Among the numerous provisions in the 640 page document, the act will allow employees not only to withdraw their own money but also to take the earnings on the money and company contributions as part of a hardship withdrawal. To address the potential for poor financial decision making, employers should caution employees that borrowing money from their retirement accounts now could severely limit their future savings. SHRM members can read more at Budget Law Eases 401(k) Hardship Withdrawals.

At the State Level

A revision of the highly anticipated and controversial Kentucky Public Pension Reform bill was introduced to the Senate on February 20th. The legislation will be debated in the legislative committee system before it has a chance to be heard by the full Senate.
