Join LSHRM and Support the Best Buddies KY Friendship Walk

April 14, 2018

Brown-Forman Amphitheater, Waterfront Park - 1301 River Rd, Louisville, KY 40202

Be awesome and Support Best Buddies!

Everybody needs a friend. But not everybody has one. It can be very hard for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities to make connections on their own. So Best Buddies matches them with a peer volunteer to form a "buddy pair". New friends open up a whole new world of opportunities! And donations from people like you and make local Best Buddies programs possible. Big, small, somewhere in between your support will not go unnoticed. Join us in giving the gift of friendship - register to walk with us at the Best Buddies Friendship Walk or make a donation today.

Legislative Update

At the National Level

Less than a month after a gunman stormed a Florida high school at least five states have adopted the measures for police to remove weapons or prevent gun sales, under what are often called “extreme risk protection orders.” While Washington has been slow to advance gun related legislation, that does not seem to be the case with many state legislatures. The shooting rampage in Florida has rekindled interest in legislation and states are considering a variety of proposals, which reflect the political bend of the people in their constituency. For example, there is interest in legislation that allows judge to order authorities to remove guns from a threatening person or prevent a gun sale if a police office or relative makes the request. Several states are reviewing gun restrictions in an effort to keep weapons out of the hands of the mentally ill.

At the State Level

In Kentucky, the bills that are being introduced are largely directed towards schools and colleges with the purpose of having more guns to address safety. For example, one bill would allow guns on campuses and another would allow unlicensed guns in public. But there is strong opposition and indications point to a more deliberate approach to setting legislation in Kentucky as opposed to the immediate actions mentioned previously. For employers, regulating firearms in the workplace is no simple matter. Employer firearm rules that go too far could lead to court litigation since the right to bear arms is often a sensitive issue. To avoid costly legal disputes, HR professionals should consult with their legal resources to understand the limits and requirements of the law.
