Learning, laughing, and lip syncing: We did it all at The 2018 National Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) conference in Chicago this June. SHRM is the proud host of the annual conference, which is the largest gathering of human resource professionals in the world. SHRM18 broke the previous attendance record with over 22,000 attendees representing 11 different countries showing up to welcome the newly appointed President and CEO, Johnny C. Taylor, Jr. to the main stage. The conference was outstanding! I was truly honored to attend along with Louisville Society for Human Resource Management (LSHRM) President Elect, Susan Huffmon.

The SHRM conference provides training and development opportunities for human resource professionals to stay current and engage in conversation with subject matter experts about the most trending issues facing the profession. This year’s conference theme challenged HR professionals; Expand Your World!

Talent Pipeline Management: An Innovative Approach to Bridging the Talent Gap

Like many cities across the United States, Louisville is currently facing a workforce crisis. Bridging the Talent Gap, a talent alignment survey conducted by LSHRM in 2017, found that 86% of Louisville’s businesses are preparing for growth in the next three to five years. At the same time, 84% of employers have difficulties filling vacancies today. This talent deficit will continue growing as demand increases posing substantial challenges for Louisville’s competitiveness in a global economy.

To address this widening talent gap, the Kentucky Chamber Workforce Center, in partnership with the US Chamber Foundation and the Kentucky Workforce Investment Board, is leading a new initiative and tool known as Talent Pipeline Management (TPM). Utilizing supply chain management principles, TPM empowers businesses to create and manage talent supply chains through projecting talent needs and aligning those with education and workforce development systems.

Kentucky has been selected as one of three states in the nation to lead this effort and will be launching their first TPM Academy in September 2018. Attendees will learn more about the state of Louisville’s workforce, how TPM works and how they can get involved to help in bridging the talent gap.

The director supports and provides oversight for the chapter newsletter, social media, and website chairs. The Director of Marketing and Communications ensures effective and consistent communication with LSHRM members and the community about upcoming programs. The SHRM eLearning team offers an extensive library of professional development tools. There are over 500+ courses on a wide variety of topics that include sessions from SHRM live events, webcasts, and conferences that can be purchased as a subscription to have all-inclusive access or you can purchase them individually.

This is a tremendous resource that will allow you to obtain recertification credits to SHRM-CP/SHRM-SCP and other HR credentials. It will also help you to meet other training requirements and improve your knowledge of topics that are relevant. SHRM keeps you connected to the latest and greatest in human resources and leadership practices.
