The Year of Innovation Comes to a Close

Dear LSHRM Member:

As we approach the close of 2018, I want to thank each of you for being a valuable member of the LSHRM family. To the 2018 LSHRM board of directors, I appreciate your exceptional work, commitment, and dedication to the human resource profession and to our members. We are blessed to have some of the most amazing volunteers in the world!

To our members, thank you for allowing me the opportunity to disrupt the status quo and to be innovative. Most of all, thank you for the privilege to serve and lead this mega chapter, Louisville Society for Human Resource Management.

Legislative Update - Retirement Savings

The “Kentucky Right to Work Act” went into effect on January 8, 2017. The Act amended Kentucky Revised Statutes 336.130(3) to provide that no employee is required to become, or remain, a member of a labor organization or to pay dues, fees, or assessments to a labor organization.

Plaintiff-unions sued the state (Zuckerman v. Bevin) alleging that the Act violated the Kentucky Constitution’s provisions requiring equal protection of the laws, prohibiting special legislation, and prohibiting takings without compensation and that the Act was improperly designated as emergency legislation.

The trial court granted the Commonwealth’s motion to dismiss. The Supreme Court affirmed on November 15th, holding that the Unions’ constitutional challenges to the Act were without merit.

Supporters of Kentucky’s Right to Work law believe no one should lose his/her job simply for joining and financially supporting a union, or for refusing to do either.

Silent Auction for SHRM a Success

A silent auction was held during the November 13th chapter meeting, and $2360.00 was raised for the SHRM Foundation. Thanks go to board members and volunteers who contributed a bottle of wine and/or a gift card. Many thanks to the members who contributed beautiful baskets that attendees could not resist. And lastly, thanks to the volunteers who helped build baskets, create a lovely event table, and to those who worked to ensure a smooth check-out. With the silent auction and basket sales at chapter meetings, we have raised $3200 this year. STILL, you help is requested. If you have not yet made your contribution, donations for 2018 are accepted through December 31, 2018.
