Civility and Respect: The Exception, Not the Rule, in the American Workplace
May 14, 2019 | 5:30 PM - 7:30 PM
Pending SHRM and HRCI
Many American workplaces publicize core values to their employees and external stakeholders which usually include the core value of respect. The reality is that while these values are written on paper, they are not embedded in the culture of the organization. The American employee at all levels is suffering from extreme stress in the workplace due to high expectations, long hours, and wages. To add to those typical workplace challenges, many employees are suffering from stress due to being bullied by their boss, a behavior that is often lawful and tolerated by most organizations.
In this program, Natasha Bowman discusses the harmful effects of workplace bullying on the American worker and makes the case as to why we must bring civility and respect back to the workplace.

Measles At Work
The recent measles outbreak raises the question of whether employers can require that workers get the vaccine to protect against measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) or prove immunity from the illness. Kentucky is among the states that have reported measles cases so far this year. The KY case originates out of the area served by the Barren River District Health Department and involves an unvaccinated child who traveled to a country where there is a measles epidemic. The child then spread the virus to a sibling. Both children have made a complete recovery. Offices and manufacturers probably can’t require vaccination or proof of immunity because the ADA generally prohibits medical examinations.
