President, Laura Wood

Greetings HR Friends (Peeps): forgive my childhood joy in seeing the yellow marshmallow chicks and bunnies in the candy aisle today.

This month I start out with CONGRATULATIONS! We’ve made it into the 2nd quarter of 2022, Covid new diagnosis and hospitalizations in Jefferson County and all surrounding counties are staying in the low to medium risk range, welcoming spring, surviving another daylight savings time, as well as the normal ups and downs with the temps in the Kentuckian area, and should I mention the seasonal allergies many of us are dealing with…I know, I know this doesn’t sound all together positive but I want you

WHAT: A showcase and celebration of compassion and service in all areas of the Louisville community.  Since 2011, MGAD has garnered over 1.3million volunteers and acts of compassion.

WHEN: April 1 – April 30, 2022

GOAL: To spotlight nonprofit organizations and needs of the community and to encourage and inspire acts of service and kindness to remember where we were this time last year.

It seems to me that many of you are doing your very best to lead the HR functions at your companies and I want you to know that your LSHRM Board is thankful and proud of what you do.

So, I’ve been talking since the beginning of the year about the 2022 LSHRM Compassion Reset and once again want to remind you what types of things are happening in the month of April and beyond you may want to get involved with:

Now more than ever acts of compassion and volunteerism are needed across our community. Whether you give an hour or a day, participate in a traditional volunteer role or a simple act of kindness like helping a neighbor or reading to a child, you can make a difference! We are partnering with the Mayor’s Office on the following three projects:

Love The Hungry -Local Action. Global Compassion project

On April 4, we will be packaging 20,000 meals for Operation Ukraine.  The ultimate goal is to package 70,000+ meals to be provided to Operation Ukraine.  The supplies will be sent to one of their partnering organizations in Poland.

Love The Hungry overview

For the past 10 years, more than 40,000 volunteers of all ages have helped create 7.5 million fortified meals that have been shared with children and families worldwide that are vulnerable to hunger and malnutrition.  This includes 600,000 meals packaged during the Mayor's Week of Service.

In addition, here are a few more opportunities to get involved and show your compassion:

4/9 Brightside Community Tree Day, Southside and Iroquois area, 8:30am – 11:30am – Family Fun
All ages of volunteers welcome -Please signup by March 11, 2022

April 13 Louisville Fairgrounds South Wing B 101 - Time 8a-11a Care Kit for New Moms project for the Office for Women assembling care kits for newborns

If you aren’t able to volunteer for any of these opportunities but still want to help in some way you may consider bringing a pack of diapers to our next Chapter Meeting on April 12 for the Saint Bernadette Louisville Diaper Bank.  You may also have the question of how to get involved in addressing diaper need in Louisville?  The Office for Women is convening a group to work on diaper need through awareness, advocacy, and legislation.  Contact the office at Gretchen.hunt@louisvilleky.gov or 502-574-3536.  You can also reach out to Louisville’s Diaper Bank at St. Bernadette’s to donate funds, diapers, or to host a diaper drive.  https://www.facebook.com/SaintBernadetteLouisvilleDiaperBank

To register for any of the LSHRM Mayor’s Give A Week opportunities, please contact Laura Wood at lwood@lshrm.org to register.  For more information about Mayor’s Give A Day Celebration of Service, go to www.mygiveaday.com

Also, due to the popular vote the decision has been made that our LSHRM Book Club will start out reading Engaging the Heart for People, Performance, and Profit: Seven Competencies of Compassion@Work, Author R. Brayton Bowen AM, SHRM-SC. More information to come later this month.

Finally, I’m more than a little excited to let you know that once again the LSHRM HR Connect committee will have tickets for Dawn at the Downs on May 1. Stay tuned.

As always, my friends, be safe, stay well and be compassionate.

Laura

Why should HR fool around with Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion?

Much like April Fools’ Day, the idea of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DE&I) is shrouded in mystery.  Not because the origin of DE&I is ambiguous or unknown like April Fools’ Day, but because there are various reasons of what makes it important, how to make it relevant, and sometimes even what it means based on who you are asking and who is trying to administer the program.  That in itself makes DE&I a tough task for anyone to tackle; however, HR professionals should invest time in DE&I.

Looking at DE&I on the surface, most generally liken it race relations. DE&I has many layers.  The nature of DE&I involves not only race relations, but can involve culture, a person’s interest, or a group that someone identifies (which that can be for a multitude of reasons). As HR professionals, it is our responsibility to be able to understand our population to see how we can positively affect it by putting in DE&I measures.
