We have all heard the statement “Think outside the box”. We even know that it means we should come up with a fresh approach or a new idea for addressing an issue. Unfortunately, while we know what it means, most of us have very little insight into how to do it. Typically, our only exposure to creative thinking is brainstorming. In this introductory presentation on creative problem solving, we will discuss the mechanics of creative thinking and consider some alternative methodologies for coming up with that “outside the box” idea.

J. Brian Atwater is an associate professor of supply chain management at Indiana University Southeast, where he teaches courses in Project Management, System Thinking and Problem Solving, and Operations Management. Dr. Atwater earned his Ph.D. at the University of Georgia in 1991.  He is certified in production and inventory management (CPIM) by the American Production & Inventory Control Society (APICS) and is a certified associate (JONAH) of the Goldratt Institute. He has published over 50 articles in a variety of professional and academic journals. In addition to his academic work, Dr. Atwater has helped a wide variety of businesses implement structured problem-solving processes.  A partial list of his past clients includes 3M Corporation, Apple Computers Inc., Carrier Transicold Inc., Hewlett-Packard Enterprise, Luckett & Farley, and Schuller/Manville Corporation.
